1 John

1 2 3 4 5

Chapter 1

1 The apostle professeth to declare what he had formerly seen and known of the Word of life, to the end that others might have fellowship with him. 5 The substance of his doctrine is, that to have fellowship with God, we must be holy as he is holy; and that if we confess our sins, we shall be forgiven through the blood of Christ.

Chapter 2

1 Christ is our advocate with the Father, and a propitiation for the sins of the whole world. 3 Rightly to know God is to keep his commandments: 7 the chief of which is to love one another. 12 The apostle addresseth Christians of various ages separately, 15 and warneth them against an inordinate love of this world: 18 and against deceivers, who were many. 20 He sheweth the means they had of knowing the truth, and of distinguishing false teachers; and pointeth out their obligation to abide in the truth which they had been taught. 29 He that doeth righteousness is born of God.

Chapter 3

1 It is a mark of God's singular love toward us, that we are now called his sons, and designed for further happiness hereafter: 3 and therefore we must obediently keep his commandments, 11 and love one another with true brotherly kindness and actual beneficence.

Chapter 4

1 The apostle warneth to try by certain rules the spirits that pretend to come from God. 7 He presseth the obligation of mutual love upon Christians from the example and commandment of God.

Chapter 5

1 He that loveth God loveth God's children, and keepeth his commandments. 4 A true faith will enable us to overcome the world. 6 The witnesses of our faith. 11 God hath given to believers eternal life through his Son: 14 and will hear and grant their petitions made according to his will. 18 God's children are distinguished from the world by abstaining from sin, and by a right knowledge. 21 A caution against idolatry.
